Great Expectations:Question!
There is one thing that I've have really been curious about since the first time I read through the chapter that it was in, and it was Pip's first real, meaningful conversation with his love and admiration, Estella. My question to all of you, does Estella really mean what she is saying to Pip in Chapter 29 Pg. 252-255, all the things that are going into his head, or is she just feeding to him what she was told to say by Miss Havisham, who still(though Estella may truely love him), possibly does not intend for Pip to marry her, despite all his efforts to become a fine gentleman?

I think that Estella is just doing as Miss Havisham says, and leading Pip on so that he will fall deeply in love with her. Miss Havisham's plan is obviously to have Estella break Pip's heart after drawing him in with her charm. However, when Estella tells Pip she doesn't have a heart it seems almost like a warning that he shouldn't become too attached or he will get hurt.
ReplyDeleteI think that so far it seems as if everything that has happened to pip has been for him to become higher-classed, more proffessessional, and rich, all so that he is qualified to marry Estella. Or it could be that Mrs. Havisham is extremely sexist and hates all men after the 'incedint', so she is making Estella say all these things and make pip super ready to marry her, and then BAM!!! Miss havisham will reveal that Estella really hates pip, and pip's heart will be broken. Revenge on Miss Havisham's 'fiancee'.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Erika, maybe Estella is actually doing what Miss Havisham wants her to do, so that Pip will become so attached to her his heart will be shattered just like hers, but Estella might have feelings for Pip as well but won't show it until Miss Havisham finally dies.
ReplyDeleteI think that whole love connection between Pip and Estella is just a scheme by Miss Havisham. She is telling Estella their "instuctions" so in the end, Pip will get his heart broken just like Miss Havisham did many years ago. When Estella tells Pip that she doesn't have a heart I think she is warning Pip not to get too close because she actually cares about his feelings. So, to answer the question, I don't think that Pip and Estella were inteded to get married even thoug hthey do have feelings fro eachother.
